Making Sure Your Property Taxes Have Been Paid:
In Cook and Lake Counties, property taxes are paid in arrears (i.e., the taxes owed for 2015 are paid in 2016), and are due in two installments:
- In Cook County, the first installment for 2015 taxes is due March 1, 2016, and the second installment's due date has not yet been determined. The taxes may be paid in person, by mail, online or at certain banks.
- In Lake County, the first installment is due June 2, 2016 and the second installment is due September 2, 2016. The taxes may be paid in person, by mail, online or at several banks.
Whether you pay your real estate taxes yourself or your lender pays them on your behalf through an escrow account, it is important to follow up and make sure the taxes have been paid. To check on the payment status, you will need the PIN for your property, which you will find on your tax bill, deed or title insurance policy. Once you have your PIN:
- For Cook County properties, go to the Cook County Treasurer's website.
- For Lake County properties, go to the Lake County Treasurer's website.
